Responsibilities

  • Measure and lay out reference points for installation.
  • Prepare tenders and quotations.
  • Assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning components.
  • Coach and instruct apprentices.
  • Measure, cut and connect piping using welding and brazing equipment.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Start up system and test for leaks using testing devices.
  • Recharge system with refrigerant, check and test regulators, calibrate system and perform routine maintenance or servicing.
  • Interpret gas codes.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair and overhaul entire heating, ventilation, air handling, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems.
  • Handle, recover and store refrigerants.
  • Install, maintain, and repair equipment in refrigerated trucks used to transport food or medical supplies.
  • Repair and replace parts and components for entire refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, or heat pump systems.
  • Read and interpret blueprints.

 

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Trade Certification

Security and safety: Basic security clearance/ Driving record check (abstract)

Transportation/travel information: Vehicle supplied by employer, willing to travel and hold a valid driver’s licence.

Work conditions and physical capabilities: Fast-paced environment, physically demanding, attention to detail, overtime required, and tight deadlines.

Own tools/equipment: Tools, safety equipment/gear, steel-toed safety boots and hard hat

  • Locate and mark positions for pipe connections, passage holes and fixtures in walls and floors.
  • Cut opening in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
  • Join pipes using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement or soldering, brazing, and welding equipment.
  • Schedule personnel, tools, and equipment
  • Test pipes for leaks using air and water pressure gauges.
  • Determine piping system requirements and pipe sizing.
  • Estimate costs and materials.
  • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipes to required shape and size.
